[Recess] Official Game Request Thread!

NerdNYC's quarterly gaming event

Postby E.T.Smith on Fri Jul 30, 2010 11:16 am

Taking to this Recess's Back to the 80's theme in an aggressively literal manner, I've decided to run one of these two games. Please weigh in on which you'd prefer to see.

Action! Romance! Giant Robot Combat! Mekton II was probably the first non-D&D rpg I ever played, and I've been poking around at it again lately, grooving to its early-days Real Robot anime aesthetic. Its a stupid-simple rpg system pasted onto a moderately detailed robot-vs-robot wargame, so expect most of the session to be petty excuses to get characters into their cockpits and on to the real business of moving figures on a hexmap.

By Crom, there will be Battle! This TSR game I knew only by (vague) reputation until a few years ago, when I finally got my hands on a real copy. Some other enthusiasts and I helped bring a retro-clone of this game about, called ZeFRS, but I haven't ever gotten to actually play it. It uses something like the Marvel FASERIP rules, and though a little slapdash is very good at presenting a tone very like Bob Howard's stories. I even have an adventure outline with characters ready to go, from the last time I tried to run it.

Doom! Doom, I say!
I keep a gaming wiki, but I'm lazy about it.

Conan sounds cooler to me :)

Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

Affirmative. Death-Bot 9000 would rather avoid internet drama.

I've been tinkering with a hack of Danger Patrol to play Star Blazers.

I have been thinking about this some while doing chores. PCs would be: Rick Marshall, father; Will Marshall, son; Holly Marshall, daughter; and Chaka the Pakuni. Another PC who could be added is Jack Marshall, the uncle (from the 3rd season when the guy who played the father quit). Though seeing some other posts, four PCs seems OK for Recess and I don't know about adding the extra character. Pro: It gets another player to the table. Con: It does not really jive with the whole Land of the Lost story line. Thoughts?

More thought about this: Land of the Lost seems rather doable with the rules to Call of Cthulhu. Creating the characters seems straight forward and developing stats for the Sleestak, Enik the Altrusian, and the Pakuni also seems possible. Beyond Dorje who first posted the idea, is there interest in a game set within the Land of the Lost?

It looks like you went for Conan. But I'm glad to see that someone else actually played Mekton. :)
In actual day-to-day life I have no problem describing D&D to a newbie as something like "You play Conan, I play Gandalf. We team up to fight Dracula." - Jeff's Gameblog
