“It is some months after the Road to Hogwarts, wherein the merry (and Gnome-thwarted) future founders of Hogwarts – Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff – became fast friends with each other and the avarian rogue, Ava Beauxbaton.

Rowena Ravenclaw has made her way in the wizarding city of Wharton Parcel – an ensorcelled city within the City of Exeter – which looks like a fallow field and one sad mare to Muggles. Ruled over by the powerful Swan Family, helmed by the Lady Magdalena, it is the largest Wizarding community in England and set to host a magnificent Fete in honor of Lady Magdalena’s husband, Sir Peck, who has recently become the owner of the Elder Wand.

But there is something rotten in Wharton.

Hufflepuff, Gryffindor and Slytherin are called to the aid of their friend, Rowena, who has been tasked with safe-guarding the Elder Wand at the Swan Fete, as rumors abound that the notorious thief, Pugnacious Gadaman has recently been seen in the area. In fact – Ages: Anyone who is Ages: Anyone – is probably in Wharton Parcel. Including Ava, whose standard, “The Gnome Who Beat the Dandy” has been making the rounds.

Are the wands behind the Two Wands Detective Agency, one stout breadmaker, a pretentious sage and a beautiful rogue with a hair-trigger temper a match for Wharton Parcel?

And will Wharton Parcel ever be the same?”

“The future is a bright and shining utopia for the people of Terra. There’s freedom from want, freedom from fear, and freedom from death.

YOU, Trooper, are not on Terra, and you’d best remember that.

You’re a member of the 3:16 Expeditionary Force, doing the ugly but vital job of making sure that none of the bad nastiness that infests the rest of the Universe ever gets anywhere near Terra. The current mission is to evac a stranded Terran Archeologist off an arid, ‘lifeless’ desert planet.

Players: Think ‘Starship Troopers’ meets ‘Platoon’ with a fast, rules-light system that lets players reveal character through harrowing battlefield action. Absolutely no experience necessary, rules taught at the table.”

This time it sure did — and you’re faced with solving about as high profile a crime as you can imagine.

You may know me as Warboss_Waaazag, although my real name is Phil, and I’ve been buying, building, and painting miniatures ever since I first started earning money (back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth – you know, 17 years ago). And I want to share what I’ve learned with you this RECESS!

For a mere $2 you get to sit down, have fun, and paint. You can even take home your very own painted model! The $2 goes towards the cost of materials.

It doesn’t matter your experience level – beginner to pro – you can learn something new and have a spectacular model to show for it, too. Learn the basics of base coating, the highlights of highlighting, and the wonders of wet blending! Come one, come all, Saturday the 14th! This RECESS, you WILL learn to paint (a miniature).”

Most adventurers here labor to harvest the beetles that breed in the rooms whose walls bleed endlessly. This menial labor is not for you; you know a guy who has a map to an undiscovered, unlooted area of the dungeon. Which is good, because you have serious debts to pay and serious ambitions to bankroll. ”

It’s a deckbuilding game, if you’re familiar with the genre. Think of games like Dominion, Ascension, or Thunderstone. The difference here is that it’s built with an all new engine that puts some twists on the formula, and every card draws from the thirteen years of Penny Arcade comics (including plenty of non-PG material). It’s a masterful reworking, with plenty of laughs and a free-flowing game that make this one of the best releases this year.

Arkham Horror 1st Edition
Arkham Horror 1st Edition
Players: 8
GM: DaftMallards
Ages: 13+
Dark
Cooperative, Competitive, Resource Management, Very Random
“Did you hear the one about the Cthulhu Mythos investigators who decided to take a sanity and health restoring vacation after a nasty encounter with the Old Ones, and chose a cozy, New England town named Arkham as their destination? Poor, doomed souls…
The first edition of Arkham Horror lets you step into the shoes of those poor, doomed souls, with lighter rules and a more competitive, “boardgamey” feel than the current edition of the game. Investigators search for items and spells, dodge or confront monsters, travel to Other Worlds, and try to close as many gates as possible before reality itself collapses. The player who closes the most gates wins, yet cooperation is necessary if Arkham is to be saved. “The Demons gated in at midnight, and now the Masters are dead, their magical defenses crumbling before your eyes. Now the isolated town of Green Valley faces death from every direction. Only you, the former students of the deceased wizards, stand in the way of utter destruction from roving bands of goblins, giants, and worse. And who knows when the Demons will return…

This game will have some houserules to help a party made up of nothing but specialist wizards be viable. Most importantly, spells will function as “”encounter”" powers rather than “”daily”" powers. You will also have slightly beefed up hitpoints.”

Maid is a Japanese RPG system where one plays a maid. It uses a rules-light system, and typically plays something like an over-the-top comedy anime. It is notably the first originally Japanense pen and paper RPG to be translated and released in English. Character generation is quick and entertaining and is part of the fun of the game so come on down to the mansion. I’m sure the Master is dying to meet you. Assuming he’s not already Undead.

“It is the twilight of the seventeenth century. The Portuguese invader dominates the South American region we now know as Brazil, strangling the native American tribes and working their cruel plantations with kidnapped and enslaved West and Central Africans. The only beacon of freedom in a hell that masquerades as civilization comes from the quilombos: hidden fortresses in the Amazon rainforest’s depths where free Africans and Amerindians study the martial arts, stockpile weapons, and plan daring raids and guerrilla campaigns against the European oppressor.

Now, in the wake of the great African King Ganga Zumba’s demise, Armageddon is close at hand. The Portuguese have summoned their generals and massed their artillery for a final crusade to exterminate the quilombos’ resistance once and for all. Can you halt the European advance and change the course of history forever, saving the nascent Brazil from herself? Play as a hard-boiled African or American Indian rebel fighter, a cunning conjurer, or the newly crowned warrior King Zumbi of Palmares himself in a desperate battle for freedom against overwhelming odds. May God make mighty your hands, for they hold South America’s fate and future.”

Like I said, simple. Well, except for that last bit…

Tunnels & Trolls is the classic game of dungeon-delving, keeping it old school for thirty years straight, long before there was an “”old school”" to keep. The Barrow Kooks – a graveyard-inhabiting cult of horrifying misfits attempting against all odds to get the world to leave them alone – thought they had succeeded in driving off the many threats arrayed against them. They thought wrong. Someone is now killing off their contacts, and in the style of assorted fictional serial killers, from manifestations of Jack the Ripper to Agatha Christie villains. The evidence points toward the Kooks, but even Fishback doesn’t remember killing Ages: Anyone recently. Time to dig up some mutilated bodies to get to the bottom of it all…
